KINGSLAND, Ga. (AP) — A man who spent more than 16 years in prison in Florida on a wrongful conviction was shot and killed Monday by a sheriff’s deputy in Georgia during a traffic stop, authorities and representatives said.Leonard Allen Cure, 53, was identified by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is reviewing the shooting. His death was confirmed to the South Florida Sun Sentinel by Seth Miller, executive director of the Innocence Project of Florida, who worked with Cure on his wrongful conviction case.“We’re devastated by the news of his tragic death, and we don’t have any further comment at this time,” Miller told the newspaper. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said a Camden County deputy pulled over a driver along Interstate 95 near the Georgia-Florida line and the driver got out of the car at the deputy’s request. He cooperated at first but became violent after he was told he was being arrested, a GBI news release said. The agency said preliminary information sho...

Key injuries and poor execution doom the 49ers in their first loss of the season

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:49:46 GMT

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — San Francisco’s high-powered offense that seemed unstoppable to begin the season looked awfully pedestrian after losing two key playmakers in a game against Cleveland’s stellar defense. With Deebo Samuel missing most of the game with a shoulder injury and Christian McCaffrey sidelined for most of the second half with an injured oblique and rib, the 49ers struggled to move the ball for most of the second half in a 19-17 loss to the Browns on Sunday.“Any time you lose real good players like that, it’s a challenge,” coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday. “But that’s stuff you’ve got to go through. That’s part of football. I just thought we made too many mistakes, missed assignments and stuff that happened.”San Francisco (5-1) had scored at least 30 points in each of the first five games, but didn’t come close to that against the Browns.Five of the Niners’ first six drives after halftime netted no yards and no fir...

Biden will head to Israel and Jordan as concerns mount that Israel-Hamas conflict will spread

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:49:46 GMT

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — President Joe Biden will travel to Israel and onto Jordan Wednesday to meet with both Israeli and Arab leadership, as concerns increase that the raging Israel-Hamas war could expand into a larger regional conflict.U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Biden’s travel to Israel as the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip grows more dire and as Israel prepares for a possible ground attack on the 141-square-mile (365-square-kilometer) territory to root out Hamas militants responsible for what U.S. and Israeli officials say was the most lethal assault against Jews since the Holocaust.Biden is looking to send the strongest message yet that the U.S. is behind Israel. His Democratic administration has pledged military support, sending U.S. carriers and aid to the region. Officials have said they would ask Congress for upward of $2 billion in additional aid for both Israel and Ukraine, which is fighting Russia’s invasion.Blinken made the announcement ea...

Dissed by Saudi Arabia, lectured by Egypt: US diplomacy meets Mideast reality

Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 08:49:46 GMT

America’s intense war-time diplomacy is so far failing to sway Arab countries in the Middle East — and President Joe Biden’s expected visit to the region may not help.In recent days, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has been nearly ghosted by Saudi Arabia’s crown prince and given a bizarre history lesson by Egypt’s ruler. U.S. officials have been unable to get most Arab leaders to denounce Hamas for the Palestinian militant group’s brutal attack on Israel or make statements supporting Israel’s military response. The diplomatic struggle suggests that U.S. influence is receding in the region, where governments’ interests often diverge from that of Washington and both Russia and China are vying for sway. And unequivocal U.S. support for Israel — as opposed to the more nuanced positions it often takes in Middle East flare-ups — may be one of the biggest barriers to better relations.“Given the fact that we are at the very early stages of this situation, U.S. diplomacy is succeeding as mu...

City Council President Ed Flynn is calling for the Boston Public Health Commission to conduct an investigation, after authorities discovered a 2-year-old boy spent a night in the violent, drug-ridden Mass and Cass zone. The toddler was seen inside a car parked in a lot on Massachusetts Avenue last Thursday night, with his mother asleep behind the wheel, but it wasn’t until past 8 a.m. the following morning that a street outreach worker alerted authorities about a woman with a “baby” on Southampton Street, a Boston Police report states.Southampton and its surrounding areas, the report notes, “are known for the avid use of drugs, illegal drug sales, human trafficking and violence.”“I think it’s a troubling development,” Flynn told the Herald Monday. “I want to first acknowledge the professionalism of our first responders, but having a child in the Mass and Cass zone is horrific, and it’s certainly child endangerment.”Flynn sent an email to Dr. Bisola Ojikuto, executiv...
