LOS ANGELES (AP) — A California appeals court said Tuesday that Leslie Van Houten, who participated in two killings at the direction of cult leader Charles Manson in 1969, should be let out of prison on parole. The appellate court’s ruling reverses an earlier decision by Gov. Gavin Newsom, who rejected parole for Van Houten in 2020. She has been recommended for parole five times since 2016. All of those recommendations were rejected by either Newsom or former California Gov. Jerry Brown. California Attorney General Rob Bonta could ask the California Supreme Court to stop her release. Neither his office nor Newsom’s immediately responded to requests for comment on whether they would do so.Van Houten, now in her 70s, is serving a life sentence for helping Manson and other followers kill Leno LaBianca, a grocer in Los Angeles, and his wife Rosemary. Van Houten was 19 at the time.Newsom has said that Van Houten still poses a danger to society. In rejecting her parole, he said she o...

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 13:22:25 GMT

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina General Assembly’s chief advocate for legalizing medical marijuana in the state revealed publicly on Tuesday how he smoked pot over 20 years ago to withstand discomforts of intense chemotherapy during a fight with cancer.Sen. Bill Rabon of Brunswick County has been working for years on a measure that lays out a structure for patients with serious and life-ending illnesses to lawfully obtain cannabis and smoke or consume it to gain relief. Legislative opponents of the idea — fewer than in previous years but still a significant bloc — argue that marijuana can lead to medical harm, only masks symptoms and would lead to making recreational use lawful.Rabon had described himself as a colon cancer survivor, but had been reticent on many details, particularly whether he had used marijuana, until pitching his bill in the House Health Committee three months after it passed the full Senate. The veterinarian recalled taking a few puffs at home aft...

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD)- A passenger is recalling her "terrifying" experience aboard a Carnival cruise ship after it was stuck at sea during a Memorial Day weekend storm. The Carnival Sunshine was returning to port in Charleston, South Carolina from the Bahamas when it was rocked by a coastal storm that generated damaging winds and high surf. A Myrtle Beach woman said she was "scared for her life" during the hourslong ordeal, which began around 8:00 p.m. on Friday. "The ship took a hit from a wave about 11:00 at night," Sharon Tutrone said. "The wave hit on our side of the ship – we were on the right side of the ship – and that wave pushed the ship to the left where I thought we were going to capsize." Tutrone, who was taking a celebratory trip with her mother after beating breast cancer, said the entire experience was "terrifying." "Going through cancer was scary, but being on that ship during that storm, that was about 30 times scarier for me," she...
